Regular comprehensive exams are the only reliable way to detect developing conditions early enough to protect your vision.

How often should I have an eye exam?
Annual comprehensive eye exams are recommended for most adults. More frequent exams may be necessary if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, wear contact lenses, or have a known eye condition that requires monitoring. Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam before starting school, and annually thereafter.
Do I need an eye exam if my vision seems fine?
Yes. Many serious eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and early macular degeneration, have no noticeable symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. A comprehensive exam allows our doctors to detect these conditions early, when treatment options are most effective. Clear vision doesn’t mean healthy eyes.
Is my contact lens prescription the same as my glasses prescription?
No. While both correct the same refractive error, contact lens prescriptions include additional measurements, lens diameter, base curve, and brand specification, that are specific to how lenses sit directly on the eye. A separate contact lens fitting is required to ensure your lenses fit properly, are comfortable, and provide clear vision. Using a glasses prescription for contacts can lead to discomfort and poor vision.
Does Texan Eye see children for eye exams?
Yes. Texan Eye provides comprehensive eye exams for pediatric patients. Early eye exams are important for detecting conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye misalignment), and refractive errors that can affect learning and development if left uncorrected. We recommend a child’s first comprehensive exam before starting school.

Is my eye exam covered by insurance?
Eye exams may be covered through medical insurance with an appropriate medical diagnosis, or through a vision insurance carrier for routine exams. Medicare covers annual dilated eye exams for patients with diabetes or at high risk for glaucoma. How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?
A comprehensive eye exam typically takes 60–90 minutes, including dilation time. If you are also scheduling a contact lens fitting or selecting frames at our optical boutique, plan for additional time. We recommend planning 1–2 hours for your first visit at a new location.
Can I drive after a dilated eye exam?
Dilation causes temporary blurring of near vision and increased light sensitivity for 3–4 hours after the exam. Most patients can still drive, though we recommend bringing sunglasses and having someone drive if you are sensitive to light or prefer not to drive with reduced near vision. Over time, patients often become accustomed to the effects and manage comfortably.
